Our Story
We set up Karuna Living to provide a home for young people who would otherwise have few alternatives for a place to live independently. We have started small with one house for 3 individuals. In doing so the aim is to develop a way of living that encourages further development of the individuals, a sense of family and greater involvement in the community.
The house was carefully chosen to provide a space for this to happen. It is in a friendly neighbourhood with easy access to local amenities. With a good size private garden there is space for growing the homes own produce and a wonderful new greenhouse to help with this.
A cabin in the grounds provides a cosy space for creativity and somewhere to have some quiet time. We have recently developed the ‘wilderness’ that was the far corner of the garden into an outside firepit chill out zone.
Inside the home is airy with an open plan layout. A large family dining table provides ample room for family and friends to join in at mealtimes. Each room has its own private bathroom and there are two overnight rooms so that support workers are comfortable too. Additional rooms provide office facilities for both Staff and the young people. Everyone has the space they need to meet their individual needs but also to allow for building friendships and that sense of family.
Our Values
Compassion
We extend the definition to ‘caring compassionately for others’ This is the driving force of everything we do, both for service users and our support workers, who we refer to as ‘companions’.
Community
Having a sense of community unites us. Being a part of a community can help us to feel we belong. At Karuna living this value is interpreted to mean that we consciously create opportunities to connect with people. We believe this helps us develop and enables us to feel safe and secure. This extends not just to our service users but also to how we as professionals relate to other professionals and each other.
Passion
We are passionate about what we do and the difference we make to the people who receive our care. We believe that our service users should be supported to live full and satisfying lives and not be limited by lack of provision.
